The True Brother Initiative has bolstered Lambda Chi Alpha’s presence as a progressive leader in the Greek world and propelled Lambda Chi Alpha forward as the premier organization in the co-curricular fraternity movement. This is due, significantly, to the quantitative, qualatative, and programmatic outcomes achieved under the True Brother umbrella.

Individual Development

For the second consecutive year, brothers in chapters implementing True Brother’s Outer Circle components are evidencing significant levels of measurable growth and development. Findings from this year’s data are as follows (normative means and scores come from a wide sample of college freshmen):

• A significant increase in self-awareness, with a mean of 44 (normative mean is 37.5)
• A remarkable increase in capacity for empathy, with a mean of 68.7 (normative mean is 35.3)
• A significant increase in altruism, with a mean of 69.6 (normative mean is 52.3)
• A significant increase in capacity for intimacy, with a mean of 64.1 (normative mean is 57.5)
• The 10 chapters that implemented the most of the True Brother components showed unparalleled growth in each of these developmental competencies.

Qualatitive Results

At the most recent Association for Fraternity Advisors annual meeting, a university administrator stood up in the middle of a presentation and stated, “In all the years I have been in higher education, I have never seen anything like this. Congratulations.” Additionally, former NIC Executive Vice President Jon Williamson (Maryland-College Park 1965) recently shared, “This is far superior to anything else out there that I have ever seen.”

True Brother has allowed for the ongoing development of important opportunities within the brotherhood. Specifically, the Master Steward program has positively impacted Lambda Chi Alpha’s ability to offer additional levels of support to chapters and colonies, while providing an elevated and meaningful volunteer experience for alumni brothers.

Implications

In working with professionals in higher education, the Greek movement, and scientific survey and assessment administration and processing, Lambda Chi Alpha is clearly charting new courses with the True Brother Initiative.

As a result, innovative opportunities, ranging from grant funding and administration, to research partnerships, and more, will be identified and acted upon to ensure the True Brother Initiative maximizes its full potential within Lambda Chi Alpha and the higher education arena.
