  1. Glenn Askew Says:

Why so many chapters on financial probation? What causes this to happen? Is this monies owed to the national fraternity or is it a result of gross indebtedness to other creditors. I’ve never seen so many in this condition! What’s happenin’?

  2. David DeVillier Says:

Re the finances of some chapters. Upsilon Zeta at LSU was once in the same shape because of finances. As the Special Assistant to then Chancellor Bud Davis, I proposed a plan that the University take over the collection of all housing and meal(s) fees for each fraternity and sororiety at the time of registration of each student,at the University. For incoming freshman who paid for meals or housing now going to be provided by the Greek organizatiion each joined, the University would credit each organization after formal rush was over. All sororities and all but two fraternities (both of which later changed their mind) agreed to this arrangement. It may only be something that would work at LSU where all Greeks are on campus and their homes are located on University properties. For the University not having to dun them to pay for the sservices the University provided, e.g. lawn and street maintenance. payments for the medical insurance and retirement benefits of each organization’s House Mother and Kitchen staff, it became a win-win situation for both the University and the Greek organizations. No longer would undergraduates be left trying to collect from their membership and the University got paid first for its services.
It has worked very, very well and I would suggest that anyone in a similar situation where the University is not being paid for services it provides, may well want to consider this plan.

It is Unfortunate to see colonies closing due to not meeting basic operating standards. I hope this is a lesson learned by those colonies trying to attain the true fraternal brotherhood that is Lambda Chi Alpha.

  4. Adam Says:

The general fraternity usually only has financial issues with a chapter when their bill is not paid to the fraternity for dues and insurance, not other debt.

  5. Bill Says:

Despite the unfortunate news, I am glad to see our national newsletter reporting the financial troubles our chapters are in. Too long those of us not present at conclaves and leadership seminars have been held in the dark about our brothers’ status. It is good to hear something, anything, about their fate.

Let this hopefully be impetus to others to help these chapters in need!

  6. Mike Says:

Most of the chapters with financial problems lack sufficient alumni support. Chapters need your support. Remember these are young men running a small business. Please help them out.

  7. William Sanchez Says:

Since I graduated from Beta-Epsolon,in Kingsville. The monthly alumni news letter went out of circulation. Who ever was left in charge did a poor job of letting the alumni know what was happening with the chapter. It was the alumni that made it possible of paying off the mortgage, and most of our debts. It is sad to hear the fraturnity is on financial probation. If I and the rest of the alumni would know hve the fraturnity is doing and been invited to homecoming, me working at a good job with some money to contribute, knowing there are responsible people in place to manage fraturnity funds and knowing were our money is needed, we would be more than willing to give money. In the past we had a good alumni organization that was well informed and contributed substantial funds to pay off debts, and participate in fraturnity events. What needs to be done? If I had an address to send funds and a monthly report on how my money is being spent I Might CONTRUBUTE A LOT OF FUNDS TO THE ORGINIZATION. SO WOULD MY FELLOW ALUMNI.

  8. Tony Medaglia Says:

Why are we publishing all this negative news about chapters being on probation and closing? Isn’t there anything positive to report? If there isn’t, maybe this is a reflection on the lack of support from the National Headquarters, and not necessarily the lack of effort on the part of actives and local alums.

  9. Lee Slaton Says:

I’m assuming this has been an ongoing problem (the financial probations) that the general alumni membership hasn’t been aware of. I’m glad to see some light being shed on this. I love the idea that David DeVillier put forward at LSU. It has to be much easier for the institution to collect upfront as opposed to billing and trying to collect each month. Great idea, David. Hopefully, that plan could be instituted across the board.

  10. Lee Slaton Says:

RE: Tony Medaglia’s comments….It is my understanding that any of us can submit content for this publication (other than perhaps recalling some zany out-of-body experience as an undergrad :-) So if we’re not seeing any news, either positive or negative, about our chapter, we only have to look in the mirror or contact some of our chapter’s active or alumni brothers to arrive at the problem and the solution.

  11. Tony Medaglia Says:

Lee–I’m not talking about not seeing news, I’m talking about seeing an overwhelming amount of negative news–i.e. National calling out the individual chapters in an open forum like C&C. I HIGHLY doubt that all of the chapters on probation thought it was a good idea to submit that fact to the magazine for publication. To me, this is National’s laundry list of examples that they are trying to make of each of the chapters that may be having difficulties.

  13. todd white Says:

quick question on symbols by each chapter news entry…what do these mean. is there a legend?

  14. Spencer Stephens Says:

RE: Tony Medaglia - I think it is good to see what chapters are struggling and need our help. One of our core ideals is Industry,.. which in my mind relates to the way things should be run and done. With these chapters struggling I believe it is our job to help them as need be; I say bring on the news whether it be good or bad. On a lighter note, we were recognized for having a good GPA,.. there’s some good news. :P

  15. Michael Haskins Says:

Since National can’t even manage to scrape up enough dough to publish a paper newsletter, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that the “Chapter News” column has been retooled to put the squeeze on delinquent chapters. National has the right to be be concerned about past due chapter bills, just as we all should be concerned about how National spends the money that they collect from everyone else. If the C&C is turning the spotlight on the finances of the chapters, how about a little more transparency with regard to how the money sent to Founders Road is spent?

  16. Spencer Stephens Says:

RE: Michael Haskins. I think you might need to take some of that anger out on a punching bag. Nationals does well with their money and even had a surplus compared to past years. If you have a problem with the way things are being run makesure to speak with your chapter’s ELC. Have a great day!

  17. Michael Haskins Says:

Wow! As a mystery write I use Google search to keep track of my name, Michael Haskins, and my book, “Chasin the Wind,” and when this showed up with a comment by Michael Haskins, but not me, I just had to check it out. God help us, there are two of me running around!

  18. Billy DeMarco Says:

Correction UMBC is not on financial probation and has been taken off the list above. I’m not surprised at the amount of chapters national “Says” owes them money. I don’t think a year went by, when I was an undergrad, that we didn’t get extra charges b/c national messed up our roster. My suggestion make some phone calls and double check the paper work.

  19. Michael Haskins Says:

Spencer — Point taken, though where you say “National does well with their money,” I’d propose that it’s OUR money. As for talking to ELCs, as chapter president for two semesters once upon a time, I long ago exceeded my personal lifetime quota for ELC conversations!

Other Michael Haskins: Good luck with the book. I checked out your site, and will definitely pick up a copy. If someone has to make my relitively uncommon name famous before I do, better a novelist than a serial killer!

  21. Rob - Phi Tau 130 Says:

As a Brother, this page on the site is embarrassing and does not represent our fraternity accurately on the whole. As an editor, writer and media coach over the past 18 years, my opinion is that Lambda Chi has lost sight of its national strategy and is losing effectiveness in keeping alums motivated. Instead of the national site being a resource dedicated to localized alumni news, connectiveness, idea-sharing and reasons to support the fraternity, these probation entries are reasons why one should avoid insuring, recommending and endowing Lambda Chi with dollars. Publicizing probation notices on the fraternity’s national site? What are you thinking? The Crescent was always something I looked forward to, but in the name of progress we had to accept the online channel. Lately, the editing (or lack of such) has our chapter news presence on the national site looking like a ratty unmanaged notebook. What’s next? A police blotter? My suggestion: Recruit an editorial board that has a better grasp of the strategic communication process. Do a better job of seeking local stories and regular positive contributions. Dig better and use your resources more effectively to find the good stories, recognize the Brotherhood’s accomplishments at more levels. Highlight leadership and values… and don’t accept that ‘no submission’ means there’s no good news to share. Revamp this section, please. Recruiting Associates, courting dollars and attracting gifts all begin at the local level. And never underestimate the power of the positive word.

  22. Tom Earp Says:

You, and you Brothers must realize, that the information departed on this particular post or thread is what is put or sent onward by the Zetas.
It is not the writer to edit as I am sure he has many other things to do.

People want to complain that there is no information about your Zeta and wonder why? If it is not sent in, it cannot be added.

So, whose problem is it? The Rho as Alumni Officer.
Maybe it is time to start doing rather than complaining about it?

Blame can only run so far.

  23. Matt Branscum Says:

Brothers, I am from the Tau Zeta chapter at Washington State, I am currently a senior so obviously I don’t know what it’s like to be an alumni. But after reading some of your complaints about your own chapters I thought about it and about how our High Rho runs his position and my conclusion is this. As the undergraduates who run the chapter house it is our responsibility to reach out to alumni and gain support. Blaming each other is a dead end road. But if you see a problem in your chapter house or at any other chapter, as a brother I think we all have the right and the responsibility to make sure that all of our brother are being held accountable. Keeping each other in check is the best way to make sure our fraternity runs smoothly and successfully both locally and nationally. Blogging will get your point across, but to make changes it takes a little more dedication, remember, what is worth having is worth working for, In Z.A.X. Tau Zeta 1680
